Founded in 1867 as the first American licensee of Alfred Nobel’s dynamite, Giant Powder played a pivotal role in supplying explosives to Western mining, railroad, and construction industries. After a series of catastrophic explosions at its original Contra Costa plant, operations were relocated to a safer site that became the town of Hercules, California—named for the company’s signature brand. By the early 20th century, under the name Giant Powder Co. Consolidated, the firm expanded into the sporting market, producing decorative tins like this one for hunters and outdoorsmen.
