A brass plaque on the frame identifies the subject as Geronimo, though such titles were often applied loosely in the romantic tradition of the late 19th century. Raschen, known for his finely detailed style and dramatic use of topography, evokes solitude and quiet introspection in expansive terrain. Raschen is reported to have accompanied General Nelson A. Miles during the 1886 capture of Geronimo, and later visited and sketched him in prison—a rarity among artists of the time .
