A chromolithograph whiskey advertisement from the early 20th century, featuring a reclining beauty and bottle of Gilt Edge Whiskey beside the slogan “A TREAT THAT CAN’T BE BEAT.” The image is presented in its original gilt-lettered mat and a black and gold San Francisco frame by Wichman, Lutgen & Co. Inc., a prominent liquor wholesaler and advertising agent active from the 1870s through the onset of Prohibition. The firm operated at 226 California Street and was known for its innovative marketing of house brands, including Gilt Edge Whiskey, Old Fig Tree Gin, and Crystal Spring Bourbon. Their striking advertising images—often printed in New York or Chicago and framed locally—were distributed to saloons and general stores throughout California. Gilt Edge Whiskey appeared in San Francisco directories as early as 1891 and remained in circulation until the 1910s. This example retains strong color and bold typography, with gilt-stamped lettering both on the mat and within the image.
