A finely executed mid-nineteenth-century German commemorative cane featuring a sculptural silver bequille handle incorporating a deeply carved ivo*ry portrait of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769–1852). Opposing the portrait is a finely modeled eagle’s head terminal, while the silver handle is richly decorated with scenes commemorating four of Wellington’s most celebrated Peninsular War victories—Assaye (1803), Bussaco (1810), Talavera (1809), and Waterloo (1815). The handle is mounted to a maple shaft with a metal ferrule.

Created during the nineteenth century’s enduring admiration for the Duke of Wellington, the cane combines portraiture, military history, and exceptional silversmithing in a single presentation piece. Its sculptural handle reflects the high level of craftsmanship associated with German luxury canes of the period. Silver handle with light surface wear and scattered minor abrasions consistent with age and careful use. The carved iv*ry portrait remains well preserved with expected age toning. Maple shaft retains its original finish with scattered handling marks and minor wear. XRF analysis indicates the silver tests above .900 fineness.
