An extraordinary French carved fruitwood system cane created circa 1827 as a Royalist tribute to the Bourbon Restoration and the posthumous legacy of Henri, Duc de Bordeaux, the “Miracle Child,” whose birth preserved the senior Bourbon line following the assassination of his father, Charles Ferdinand, Duc de Berry, in 1820. Conceived as both a work of devotional art and a political statement, the cane is richly carved with the royal arms of France, the insignia of the Order of the Holy Spirit, the Sacred Heart, fleurs-de-lis, military trophies, and allegorical symbols celebrating the union of throne and altar.

The cane’s greatest achievement is its ingenious concealed construction. Nine threaded sections unscrew to reveal miniature sculptures carved in the round depicting the Crucifixion, the Pietà, the Baptism of Clovis, King Charles X, the young Duc de Bordeaux, Saint Peter, and Saint Clotilde, together with hidden compartments intended for relics and a manuscript. Accompanied by extensive French research, the cane has been attributed to a professional sculptor working about 1827 and represents an exceptional combination of virtuoso carving, mechanical ingenuity, and Bourbon Restoration iconography. Among French system canes, few examples display such a sophisticated narrative program or survive with comparable documentation.
