A finely modeled early Victorian sterling silver covered vegetable dish by George Angell, London, 1843. The oval form is richly decorated in repoussé and chased relief with fruits, flowers, and scrolling foliage, supported on lion-mask and paw feet, and fitted with scroll side handles. The conforming domed lid features a naturalistic foliate finial and retains traces of its original gilt interior. Angell’s workshop, successor to Joseph Angell & Son, was among the foremost of mid-19th century London silversmiths, noted for their sculptural repoussé ornamentation and balanced classical design.
