Left side of frame marked in a two-line circle “TIPPING & LAWDEN/SHARPS’ PATENT”. Frame engraved with fine flowing foliate scrolls with foliate engraving on the barrels that feature textured oval on each side to provide a secure grip when sliding the barrels forward. Barrels with the expected Birmingham commercial proof marks. Produced under license from Sharps by Tipping & Lawden in Birmingham, England, these pistols were similar to the Sharps Type 1A guns and utilized the Sharps rotating firing pin, sliding barrels and hammer interlock to prevent the barrels from being moved unless the hammer is in the half-cock position. The guns were produced from the early 1860s through about 1880, even after Webley acquired Tipping & Lawden in 1877, indicating the popularity of the model. The pistol is accompanied by a lovely, partitioned English casing with a burled veneer top, bible hinges and a dark blue baize lining. The case includes two lidded compartments and a cleaning rod.The bottom of the case is stamped “C.F. HUTTON” and has the remnants of an old stuck on label that is not legible. Metal with nearly all of the original nickel plating intact, showing only some minor thinning and minor high edge wear, as well as few tiny, flaked areas. There are some lightly scattered freckled areas of surface oxidation, primarily where the finish has worn. Hammers and cocking levers with some of their bright fire blue remaining, showing moderate thinning, wear and fading. Markings and engraving remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional actions. Bores good with strong rifling, moderate oxidation and some lightly scattered pitting. Grips fine and crisp with some minor marks and minute edge wear. Case with moderate wear, some staining and discoloration on the interior and residue inside the casing from the oxidation on the cartridges.
