A single-owner set of eight Danish Modern rosewood dining chairs, comprising two armchairs and six side chairs, designed by Ejner Larsen (1917–1987) and Aksel Bender Madsen (1916–2000) and produced by Copenhagen cabinetmaker Willy Beck. One chair retains the original metal maker’s label identifying Willy Beck as cabinetmaker and naming Larsen and Bender Madsen.
Larsen and Bender Madsen were among the leading figures of the Danish Modern movement that emerged after the Second World War, a period that established Denmark as an international center of furniture design. Their work emphasized functional design, careful proportion, and traditional cabinetmaking techniques rather than ornament. Their designs were produced by a select number of respected Danish workshops, including Willy Beck of Copenhagen, whose furniture is recognized for its exceptional craftsmanship.
Executed in richly figured rosewood with original black leather upholstery, the chairs—and the accompanying dining table and credenza offered in the following lots—showcase one of the world’s most prized cabinet woods. Rosewood derives its common name from the sweet, floral fragrance released when freshly cut and has long been valued for its exceptional hardness, rich coloration, and dramatic grain, making it a favored material for the finest cabinet furniture and luxury decorative arts.
