Created for private devotion, images of the Holy Family encouraged meditation on the virtues of faith, humility, obedience, and the sanctity of family life, making them among the most enduring subjects of colonial Ecuadorian religious art. The painting is further distinguished by its direct Ecuadorian provenance, having been collected in Quito by Ana Cordovez before descending through the family of Ximena Angotti (1929–2024), Honorary Consul of Ecuador in San Francisco, and retained by the family until the present deaccession by the current heir.
