The work is from Warhol’s celebrated $9 portfolio (Feldman & Schellmann II.285–286), issued in 1982 in an edition of 35 numbered impressions, together with 10 artist’s proofs and 2 printer’s proofs. Each impression was produced in a unique combination of colors, making every impression from the edition unique.

The present impression features a vibrant yellow ground with nine multicolored dollar signs arranged in a three-by-three grid, one of the defining images from Warhol’s late graphic oeuvre. Created during a period of renewed international acclaim, the series reflects the artist’s enduring fascination with money, celebrity, commerce, and the visual language of American consumer culture. By transforming the ubiquitous dollar sign into a boldly colored Pop icon, Warhol explored the increasingly blurred boundaries between art, commerce, celebrity, and wealth that defined late twentieth-century American culture.

This impression is further distinguished by an unusually complete provenance archive, including the original Martin Lawrence Galleries sales invoice, Martin Lawrence Limited Editions Certificate of Authenticity, California Certificate of Tirage, gallery inventory labels, and original gallery framing documentation. Martin Lawrence Galleries was one of the leading distributors of Andy Warhol’s graphic work during the 1980s, and the survival of this documentation provides an exceptional and uninterrupted ownership history dating to the work’s original retail sale on February 12, 1989. Printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, Warhol’s master printer and longtime collaborator, the edition is among the artist’s most significant late graphic editions.
