Framed Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Screenprint, "Mao". Verso lower right corner stamped ‘Copyright Andy Warhol 1972 Printed At Styria Studio Inc., 25/500.’ Verso lower left signed ‘Andy Warhol’. Screenprint in Colors on Beckett High White. 1972.
A highly controversial image from the 1970’s, and a reflection of the political and social turmoil of the era. Warhol was fascinated by Mao’s image, believing that it already appeared, as is, like a silkscreen. He saw Mao’s image as its own type of mass produced art, not unlike his own. Warhol created his own version, reflecting both capitalism and communism’s fascination with fame, celebrity, and commodification of images. Warhol’s version of Mao’s image became one of his best known works.
