A lithographed tin advertising tray for Ruhstaller Brewery, Sacramento, California, depicting the company’s landmark brewery at 12th and Q Streets together with horse-drawn delivery wagons and early motor trucks. Produced by American Art Works of Coshocton, Ohio, one of the nation’s foremost manufacturers of premium advertising displays, the tray promotes Ruhstaller Gilt Edge Lager & Steam Beer beneath the slogan, “Best Beer Brewed.”

Captain Frank Ruhstaller (1848–1911), a Swiss immigrant and California pioneer, founded Ruhstaller Brewery in Sacramento in 1881, building it into one of the largest and most influential breweries on the West Coast. Renowned for its modern brewing methods and extensive distribution throughout Northern California, the company merged with Buffalo Brewing in 1897 to form the Sacramento Brewing Company, though the Ruhstaller name remained one of California’s best-known beer brands for decades. The present tray preserves an exceptional period view of the brewery at the height of its success.

Condition

Appears entirely original with no evidence of restoration. The lithographed surface retains exceptional original color and gloss with only a few faint surface scratches and scattered minor handling marks visible upon close inspection. The gilt outer rim exhibits light wear with a few tiny nicks, rubs, and isolated spots of finish loss, while the green border remains exceptionally clean. The reverse retains its original olive-green finish with only light storage wear and a few scattered scratches. Remarkably well preserved for a commercially produced serving tray intended for everyday use, its outstanding state of preservation reflects generations of careful family ownership.
