Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left, titled on reverse Temptation. A striking allegorical scene depicting a red-clad devilish figure standing on a rocky shore, offering treasure to a group of mermaids who reach toward him in longing. Blending Cooper’s fascination with myth, sensuality, and moral narrative, the work is a dramatic example of his allegorical oeuvre. Dimensions: 27 1/2 x 20 1/2 in., framed 35 1/2 x 28 1/2 in.
