A historic game-used Louisville Slugger bat presented by Hall of Famer Stan Musial (1920–2013) to the Press & Union Club of San Francisco, marking his final appearance at Candlestick Park on August 27, 1963. The bat is accompanied by a framed color photograph documenting the moment of presentation, signed by Musial with the dedication “To Mervyn, Best Wishes, Stan Musial.” The bat bears a metal plaque inscribed: “STAN MUSIAL / Aug. 27, 1963 / Presented To / THE PRESS & UNION CLUB OF SAN FRANCISCO / MY LAST BAT USED AT CANDLESTICK”
This genuine Hillerich & Bradsby Co. Musial model bat measures 34 1/2 inches. Light game use evident. An extraordinary relic from one of baseball’s most consistent and revered hitters, commemorating his farewell to San Francisco fans in his final playing season.
On August 27, 1963, as Stan Musial neared the end of his legendary 22-season career with the St. Louis Cardinals, he stepped onto the field at Candlestick Park for the last time. Ever gracious with fans and press alike, Musial marked the occasion by presenting this very bat – his final used bat at Candlestick – to San Francisco’s Press & Union Club. This personal gesture was emblematic of “Stan the Man,” who not only set records at the plate but earned universal respect for his sportsmanship and character. Items directly tied to milestone games and personal presentations by Musial remain among the most coveted memorabilia for advanced baseball collectors.
Provenance: By direct family descent from Mervyn J. Goodman, a prominent Bay Area sports columnist and Press & Union Club member who received the bat directly from Musial at the 1963 presentation. Thence by descent to the current owner, his great-niece.
