American Waltham Watch Co. 16-size, 17-jewel “Riverside” grade hunting-case pocket watch retailed by the prestigious San Francisco jeweler Shreve & Co. The movement, serial number 10041347, was manufactured in 1900 and represents one of Waltham’s respected higher-grade models, featuring a bridge plate movement with Breguet hairspring and adjustment to position. Housed in a solid 14K gold Wadsworth hunting case, XRF tested and confirmed, the watch weighs 119 grams. The interior cuvette bears a finely engraved presentation inscription reading: “Presented to Thomas C. Carroll as a token of esteem by his fellow employees of the F. E. & P. B. Works, San Francisco, Cal., Dec. 24, 1901.” The reverse of the case is engraved with an elaborate monogram, while the front cover features an engraved elk’s head above the initials “B.P.O.E.,” denoting membership in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. A historically interesting California presentation watch combining a high-grade Waltham movement with an early twentieth-century San Francisco presentation and direct family provenance.
