American, circa 1896. Lady’s 14K yellow gold hunting case pocket watch by the Elgin National Watch Company, housed in an engraved Dueber Champion case and accompanied by a period rope-link chain. The watch contains a 15-jewel, Grade 129, Model 1 movement, serial number 6124258, manufactured in 1896 as part of a production run of just 1,000 examples. The white enamel dial features black Roman numerals, gilt floral decoration, blued steel hands, and a subsidiary seconds register. The elaborately hand-engraved hunting case is decorated with Victorian floral and foliate motifs and bears a central monogram. The interior dust cover is engraved “With love Papa,” adding a personal period inscription. XRF analysis confirms both the watch case and chain test as approximately 14-karat gold.
