A Washoe coiled polychrome basket bowl decorated with four large butterfly motifs rendered in dark brown against a natural buff ground. The Washoe homeland encompasses the Lake Tahoe Basin and adjacent valleys of present-day western Nevada and eastern California, where basket weaving was central to both daily life and trade. Constructed of willow over a willow rod foundation with bracken fern root providing the dark decorative elements, Washoe baskets were used for gathering, storage, seed processing, and ceremonial purposes. The butterfly, a favored motif in Washoe basketry, reflects the tribe’s mastery of bold, balanced geometric design. Baskets of this type became especially popular with collectors during the flourishing Native California basket market of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
