Top strap roll marked on either side of the sighting groove “ROGERS & SPENCER” and “UNICA N-Y”. Left grip with crisp script RPB cartouche, the mark of arsenal sub-inspector Robert P Beals who inspected the Rogers & Spencer contract. Beals’ small capital “B” marks are present on the bottoms of the grips and on most major components. Matching serial numbers on the butt, frame, cylinder, barrel, loading lever and in both grips. The Rogers & Spencer was the pinnacle of percussion single action revolver design, but the 5,000 guns ordered by the Ordnance Department were only starting to be delivered in early 1865 as the Civil War was winding down. Only 1,500 guns were delivered prior to the cessation of hostilities, and none were issued for field service. The guns were subsequently sold off at auction as surplus. Loading lever and hammer with much of their dulled and muted case colors intact. Markings remain clear and crisp. Mechanically functional action. Fine bore is bright with crisp rifling. Grips near fine with some wear and minor chipping along the sharp, flared lower edges. Otherwise grips with some scattered minor marks and dings.
