Exceptionally rare and historically significant silver medallion issued in 1856 for the San Francisco Committee of Vigilance. Struck for purchase by members of the second vigilante committee rather than as a standard issued badge, the obverse depicts Lady Justice with sword and scales, encircled by the Latin motto “Fiat Justitia Ruat Caelum” (“Let justice be done though the heavens fall”), and marked “SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA” below. The reverse bears a radiant eye with the inscription “ORGANIZED 9TH JUNE 1851. REORGANIZED 14TH MAY 1856 / COMMITTEE OF VIGILANCE” and a blank tablet for engraving. While committee membership exceeded 6,000 individuals, only approximately ten examples are known to survive, underscoring their rarity. These medallions served as commemorative symbols of participation in the Committee’s dramatic assertion of extralegal justice during a formative period of San Francisco’s growth.
