Two Native California baskets representing the distinct basketry traditions of the Pomo and Mono Lake Paiute peoples. The larger Pomo polychrome coiled basket bowl with raised top knot originates from the region surrounding Clear Lake and the Russian River valleys of Northern California, where Pomo weavers produced some of the most celebrated basketry in North America for domestic, ceremonial, and trade use. Woven of natural and dyed plant fibers, the bowl retains its central top knot and is decorated with geometric ornament.

The accompanying Mono Lake Paiute coiled basket bowl comes from the Mono Basin and eastern Sierra Nevada near present-day Mono Lake, where basketry played an essential role in gathering, storage, and everyday life. Woven of native plant fibers with contrasting dyed elements, the basket features repeating stylized eagle motifs around the exterior with complementary geometric decoration below the rim.

Dimensions: Pomo: 9 x 9 x 3.75 in., high. Mono Lake Paiute: 6.25 x 6.25 x 3 in., high.
