Original monochrome charcoal drawing by acclaimed American Western artist Paul Pletka (American, b. 1946), depicting three Native American chanters rendered in the artist’s expressive, gestural style. The composition is identifiable as The Chanters, the original monochrome reproduced in the June 1975 issue of Arizona Highways, where it accompanied an article highlighting Pletka’s work and the Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial in Gallup, New Mexico. Included with the lot are the June 1975 issue of Arizona Highways illustrating the published work, a preliminary pencil sketch, and the artist’s handwritten note reading, “Sketch & Show Catalog enclosed,” preserved on the reverse. Executed early in Pletka’s career, the drawing captures the spontaneity and emotional intensity that became hallmarks of his celebrated portrayals of Native American subjects.
