Oil on canvas, signed lower left “M. Straus / S.F. CAL.” A richly detailed California genre scene by San Francisco artist Meyer Straus, depicting a humble homestead on the outskirts of Monterey. Beneath a sprawling tree, a woman tends to her chickens as laundry dries between poles, with a child nearby and rustic structures dotting the field. Straus, known for his luminist landscapes and romanticized coastal views, captures a rare moment of domestic tranquility and agrarian life on the 19th-century Central Coast.
