Signed and dated acrylic on canvas, titled Glad You’re Here on the reverse. Painted in 1991, this vibrant composition exemplifies Maija Peeples-Bright’s exuberant visual language, dividing the canvas into distinct fields populated by her characteristic “beasties,” flowering forms, and animated zebra motifs rendered in richly textured impasto. Brilliant color, playful imagery, and densely layered surfaces reflect the inventive spirit of Northern California’s Funk Art movement, where humor, imagination, and expressive surface took precedence over traditional representation.

Born in Riga, Latvia, Peeples-Bright immigrated to California as a child and earned her MFA from the University of California, Davis, studying under Robert Arneson, Wayne Thiebaud, and William T. Wiley. She became one of the central artists associated with Adeliza McHugh’s influential Candy Store Gallery in Folsom, joining Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, David Gilhooly, and Peter VandenBerge in the celebrated “Candy Store Bunch.” Today her work is represented in the collections of the Crocker Art Museum, Manetti Shrem Museum of Art, UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Cincinnati Art Museum, and other institutions, and has recently been featured in major museum exhibitions including The Candy Store: Funk, Art, and Other Art with a Kick at the Crocker Art Museum and the 2026 retrospective Life is Just a Bowl of Terriers at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art.
