Two baskets representing the basketry traditions of interior California and the western Great Basin. The Maidu basket was woven by the Indigenous people of the northern Sierra Nevada and Sacramento Valley of present-day California, where finely crafted coiled baskets served important household, gathering, and ceremonial purposes. The accompanying Panamint polychrome bottleneck basket is attributed to the Panamint (Timbisha Shoshone) people of the Death Valley region of eastern California. Bottleneck forms were well suited for storing seeds and other small provisions, while the use of naturally dyed plant fibers created striking geometric decoration characteristic of Great Basin basketry.
