Collection of forty-seven (47) original 1940 Gum Inc. Superman trading cards, comprising card numbers 25–63 and 65–72, with no duplicates. All but one of the high-numbered cards are present. The key card, #72 “Superman vs. Torpedo,” is included and professionally graded PSA 2.5 (Good+). Also included are #54 PSA 4 (VG-EX), #55 PSA 5.5 (EX+), and #57 PSA 5 (EX).

Issued by Gum Inc. of Philadelphia in 1940, this landmark 72-card series is widely regarded as the first Superman trading card set and one of the most important non-sport trading card issues ever produced. Released just two years after Action Comics #1 (1938), the set chronicles Superman’s earliest adventures and helped establish the character’s enduring popularity. The high-numbered cards were printed in smaller quantities and typically saw heavier handling by young collectors. Card #72, “Superman vs. Torpedo,” is among the key cards in the series and is seldom encountered in higher grades, owing in part to its position as the final card in the set, where it often received the greatest wear from repeated handling.

Dimensions: Standard trading card size, approximately 2½ x 3 inches each.

Shipping: Free Sacramento pickup. Shipping via FedEx for $45 + 1.5% insurance (unless waived in writing).

Condition

Card #54 is graded PSA 4 (VG-EX); #55 is graded PSA 5.5 (EX+); #57 is graded PSA 5 (EX); and #72 is graded PSA 2.5 (Good+). The remaining forty-three cards are ungraded and average between Fair and Very Good condition. Individual condition reports are available upon request.
