Rare original 4th state of the John Wilkes Booth assassination reward broadside, issued by the U.S. War Department on April 20, 1865, offering a combined $100,000 reward for the capture of Booth, John H. Surratt, and David C. Herold. This printing features blank rectangular slots at the top for intended photographic portraits of each fugitive. However, Booth and Herold were apprehended at Richard H. Garrett’s farm in Virginia before these posters could be publicly displayed, and period photos were never mounted. Examples with photographs are known to have been altered post-period for decorative purposes. This broadside remains a powerful historical document of the national pursuit of Lincoln’s assassins.
