Handwritten letter from Samuel Adams (1722-1803) to Elbridge Gerry (1744-1814) dated 1784. This letter was read in the House of Representatives July 9, 1784 and, as noted in the letter, approved by John Hancock. Adams, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was a member and clerk of the Colonial Assembly in Massachusetts. Gerry, also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, was also a member of the Colonial Assembly. In 1783, Gerry was one of the most effective opponents of Alexander Hamilton's proposals for a peacetime military establishment. Gerry was also Vice President with President James Monroe until his death (1813-1814). The term "gerrymandering" is named after him.
