Large coiled Apache olla basket woven of willow and devil’s claw, decorated with a continuous pictorial program depicting stylized human and quadruped figures interspersed with stepped geometric and zigzag motifs. The Western Apache traditionally occupied the mountainous regions of east-central Arizona, extending from the area northeast of present-day Phoenix eastward to the New Mexico border and south toward the Gila River. Large olla baskets of this type were traditionally used by the Western Apache for storing and transporting water and for storing seeds, corn, and other foodstuffs. Produced during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they represent among the finest achievements of Southwestern basketry.
