John Sloan was a prominent American painter and etcher, celebrated as a founder of the Ashcan School and a key member of “The Eight,” known for realist depictions of everyday urban life in early 20th century New York. After 1920, he spent summers in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where his work shifted to regional subjects and landscapes, as exemplified in this 1938 painting.
