An Art Deco figural bronze and iv*ry sculpture titled Pierrot et Colombine by Demétre H. Chiparus (1886–1947), depicting the beloved characters of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte. Pierrot, the melancholy clown dressed in white, cradles Colombine in a theatrical composition that reflects the elegance and romance associated with the Art Deco period. The sculpture is executed in finely patinated bronze with carved iv*ry faces and hands, mounted on a stepped Belgian black marble base accented with banded onyx panels.
Born in Romania and active in Paris, Chiparus is recognized as one of the defining sculptors of the Art Deco movement, helping establish the luxurious and theatrical style that came to symbolize Paris between the two World Wars. His sculptures were sold through leading Parisian firms including Edmond Etling and Goldscheider and exhibited at the Paris Salons, making him one of the most celebrated decorative sculptors of the era.
This example bears the engraved D.H. Chiparus signature and retains the original Etling Paris retailer’s seal. Etling was among the foremost Parisian publishers and retailers of Art Deco sculpture, marketing authentic works by Chiparus and other leading artists during the period.
