A very interesting percussion target rifle, made by Slotter & Co. of Philadelphia, and additionally marked Beck, made for Charles Curry, an Irish born gunsmith who operated in San Francisco until his death in 1863. The massive octagonal barrel has a heavy steel rib beneath the barrel, and is marked as mentioned, as well as “361 Gain Twist Wart,” on the breech. The barrel was probably made by the highly respected Lebanon Pennsylvania gunsmith, Christian Beck, for the Philadelphia gunsmith Slotter, who then assembled the rifle and shipped it to Charles Curry.  The lock is also marked Slotter & Co., Phila. The mounts are very high quality silver colored metal, and several bear the number “12.” The gun has double set triggers, and the lock remains crisp and strong. There is a thin gold line on the breech. The relationship between Curry and Slotter & Company is extensively discussed in Mr. Shelton’s book, California Gunsmiths. Dimensions: The gun is 49 inches long overall, with a 33 inch barrel. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $45.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. The barrel is in the white, and has a number of small dings on it from handling, and is generally stained, with a few small patches of pitting. The back action lock is also slightly stained. The stock is very good, but has a somewhat crude repair to the toe of the butt.
