An important German Modernist presentation cane created by Berlin goldsmith Alfons Ungerer (1884–1961) for the influential writer, art critic, and cultural theorist Carl Einstein (1885–1940). The ebony shaft is mounted with a sculptural silver handle depicting an African head, its crook formed from bold, Expressionist lettering spelling “NEGERPLASTIK LEIPZIG 1915,” commemorating Einstein’s landmark publication Negerplastik. The collar is pierced with “CARL EINSTEIN” and bears Ungerer’s maker’s mark together with German silver hallmarks.

A master goldsmith active in Berlin during the transition from Jugendstil to early Modernism, Ungerer was known for expressive sculptural silverwork that integrated form and typography. Those qualities are fully realized in the present cane, where the inscription itself becomes part of the design. Published in 1915, Negerplastik was among the first major European studies to recognize African sculpture as fine art, profoundly influencing the development of Cubism and modern art. Created to commemorate that groundbreaking work, this cane represents a rare intersection of decorative arts, literature, and the birth of modern art history.
