.54 caliber. 20” round barrel, 39 1/2” overall. SN: 11767 . Walnut buttstock and forend. Standard Fifth Model configuration with pivoting breech block, hinged operating lever, sling bar and ring, and military rear sight. Top of receiver originally marked “BURNSIDE PATENT / MARCH 25th 1856” (partially legible). Lockplate marked “BURNSIDE RIFLE Co / PROVIDENCE–R.I.” Carried during the Civil War by Pvt. James Ellis of the 26th Illinois Volunteer Infantry , a Western Theater regiment engaged at Corinth, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Savannah, and through the Carolinas Campaign. The carbine remained in the Ellis family for more than a century, passing from Ellis to James Henry Nagel Sr. (1910–1997) and then to James Henry Nagel Jr. , preserving a direct line of descent. Accompanied by a framed group of associated G.A.R. veteran material including his 1865 discharge, 1905 National Encampment medallion, G.A.R. badge plaque, and arranged buttons. Condition

Good. Metal surfaces with a smooth, even brown patina and scattered light oxidation. Markings legible where present. Action functional but somewhat stiff from age. Bore shows wear with dark oxidation but visible rifling. Walnut stock with handling marks, abrasions, and a stable age crack at the wrist; otherwise sound.
