A fine late 19th-century French gilt bronze and green onyx maritime compendium clock, attributed to André-Romain Guilmet (1827–1892), incorporating a terrestrial globe, clock, barometer, thermometer, and compass in an elaborate nautical design. The case is surmounted by a papered terrestrial globe signed “E. Bertaux, Editeur, Rue Serpente 25, Paris,” representing the Earth with twelve color-printed gores and detailed cartographic content. The globe rests in a turned brass armillary mount above a pyramidal plinth centered by a clock with Roman numeral dial and blued steel hands. To the right, a barometer is framed within a stylized gear wheel, while to the left, a ship’s wheel–form compass and anchor-mounted thermometer complete the maritime tableau. The movement, numbered 11843, and the accompanying key marked “Made in England,” suggest a French case fitted with an English movement, a collaboration seen in fine compendium clocks of the period. This model reflects Guilmet’s fascination with industrial mechanics and maritime precision, echoing his celebrated Industrial Revolution clocks of the 1870s–1880s.
