Literature: See Revisiting Ammi Phillips: Fifty Years of American Portraiture, by Stacy C. Hollander and Howard Fertig, curators, p. 62; the subject is listed as Rhoda Bennett. It was speculated that the painting was probably done in the Great Barrington, Massachusetts, area.
