18K yellow gold hunter case pocket watch retailed by Geo. C. Shreve & Co., San Francisco, with case manufactured by Geo. W. Welsh’s Sons, New York. The case features an inlaid panel depicting the Seal of the State of California, framed within a six-pointed star motif, with natural quartz and gold elements. The reverse cover is elaborately engraved with an intertwined monogram. White enamel dial signed Geo. C. Shreve & Co. San Francisco with Arabic numerals and subsidiary seconds dial.
High-grade movement by Elgin National Watch Co., Grade 86, Model 2, 15 jewels, lever-set, serial number 4907999, produced circa 1893, and engraved Specially for Geo. C. Shreve & Co. The movement bridge marked National Watch Co., reflecting Elgin’s original corporate name.
This example was sold near the close of the Geo. C. Shreve & Co. period, just prior to the firm’s reorganization as Shreve & Co. in 1894.
