14K yellow gold match safe (vesta case) by Shreve & Co., San Francisco, featuring an inset oval cabochon of natural gold-in-quartz within a scrolling rococo-style frame. The reverse is engraved with foliate flourishes, and the hinged lid opens to reveal the maker’s mark “SHREVE & CO 14K.”
Founded in 1852 by George C. Shreve and renamed Shreve & Co. in 1894, the firm became San Francisco’s premier jeweler of the Gold Rush and Gilded Age eras. Shreve’s gold quartz jewelry and luxury accessories epitomized the refinement and prosperity of California craftsmanship in the late 19th century.
