A California gold-quartz presentation cane featuring a substantial engraved gold handle mounted on a finely finished rosewood shaft. The top is set with a large octagonal polished specimen of natural gold-bearing quartz displaying prominent native gold within a white quartz matrix. Finely engraved foliate ornament decorates the handle, which bears inscriptions believed to read “To L.J.M.L.” and “From L.F.D.”, suggesting the cane was presented as a personal gift. The gold mounts test approximately 15K+ by XRF analysis. Combining California gold-quartz with refined nineteenth-century craftsmanship, the present example reflects the distinctive luxury objects produced by California jewelers during the decades following the Gold Rush.
Dimensions: 35.5 in. long overall; handle approximately 1.25 in. diameter; gold-quartz head approximately 2 in. diameter.
